Hello World History Students!
Let’s learn about Imperialism and the Scramble for Africa.
This Activity has FOUR parts. Make sure to complete all the parts and make sure you complete them in order.

FIRST
Take a few minutes to read the background piece about the emergence of advanced Imperialism in Africa.
SECOND
Answer the following questions based on the background piece and the Scramble for Africa cartoon. Answer on your own paper and in complete sentences. Make sure to label this as the SECOND assignment on The Scramble for Africa.
- According to the cartoon, which European countries were fighting for a position in Africa?
- Based on the background reading and your knowledge of Imperialism, does the cartoon really show what was going on during the time? Why or why not?
- How did the Berlin Conference lead to the situation shown in the cartoon? Use the background reading to remind you of the Berlin Conference.
- What happened to the Boers at the end of the Boer war?
- Could you draw a better cartoon to represent the Scramble for Africa? How? Draw one on your paper.
THIRD
Examine the Maps: #1: Africa 1880 and #2: Africa 1885-1914. Then answer the following questions on your own paper in complete sentences. Make sure to label it the THIRD assignment on the Scramble for Africa.
- What is the main DIFFERENCE between the two maps?
- What part did the Berlin Conference play in the creation of the 2nd Map?
- What happened to the independent states in Africa by the year 1914?
- According to the 2nd map–which 2 European Nations had the most territory in Africa between 1885 and 1914?
FOURTH
Examine the Percentage of Africa Controlled by European Countries in 1913 Pie Graph.
Then answer the questions on your own paper. Make sure to label it the FOURTH assignment on the Scramble for Africa.
- What percentage of Africa was colonized by 1913?
- Which 2 European countries held the most territory in Africa? Is this the same answer as #4 from the Map Comparison Questions?
- What percentage of Africa was controlled by the rest of the countries (exclude the 2 countries mentioned in number 2)?
- Critical Thinking–Would the borders of colonial Africa (as shown in the pie cart and the 2nd Map) have been the same if their had never been a Berlin Conference? Explain your answer in full detail.
